Britische Verlage setzen auf digitale Medien 2013

Zwei aufschlussreiche Tage bei britischen Fachmedienhäusern und Dienstleistern erlebten die Teilnehmer der ersten Deutsche Fachpresse Publishers‘ UK Tour nach London, die von der VDZ Akademie Ende Februar organisiert worden war. Gemeinsam war allen britischen Fachmedienhäusern der starke Fokus auf digitale Geschäftsmodelle. „Our perspective is to grow revenue from all digital areas“, so Jane Macken, Managing Director Haymarket Business Media.

Dabei spielt Content Marketing in unterschiedlichen Ausprägungsformen eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle. Centaur generiert damit bereits 80% seiner Digitalumsätze. Der britische Verband PPA Business sieht bei seinen Mitgliedern die Herausbildung zweier Geschäftsmodell-Typen.

Erstens, das Worflow-Modell mit Abo-Erlösen, hochwertigen Inhalten und nahezu ausschließlich digitalen Medien.
Zweitens das Markenmodell, mit großem Anteil von Werbeerlösen und breitem Zielgruppenzugang rund um die Medienmarke. Transformation und Veränderung prägen die britischen Fachmedienhäuser. „You need to be able to embrace change“, brachte es Paul Rayson, Vice President IHS auf den Punkt.

IHS Jane´s 

IHS Jane’s is a British publishing company specialising in transportation and military topics. It offers intelligence, consultancy and advertising solutions to the defense, national security and transport sectors. Jane’s was founded by Fred T. Jane in 1898 who had begun by sketching ships as an enthusiast which ultimately culminated in the publishing of All the World’s Fighting Ships. The company is now owned by IHS Inc a publicly traded business and data publisher/information services company based in the USA.

Informa Business Information

Informa was formed in December 1998 by the merger of IBC Group and LLP (Lloyd’s of London Press) and is an internationally operating B2B publisher. The company merged with academic publishers Taylor & Francis and acquired IIR Holdings and Datamonitor in 2005 and 2007 respectively. Its corporate structure is three-fold including academic information (Taylor & Francis), professional and commercial Information and events & Training. One of the company’s best-known publications, Lloyd’s List, goes back to 1734 when the first issue of this maritime publication was first pinned to the wall of Edward Lloyd’s City of London coffee shop. Lloyd’s List is still published daily and, along with other products and services, provides information and analysis for business decision makers in the global shipping community.


Mag+, a Swedish company, is a publishing platform for tablets enabling publishers to create apps on tablets and smartphones without coding and the need for programming skills. Clients include Bloomberg Markets, British Journal of Photography, Germanwings Magazin, Marie Claire Maison, Maxim, IKEA, Science Ilustrated.


Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network that helps organising research, enables online collaboration with others and discovering the latest research. Features include automatic generation of bibliographies, importing papers from other research software, finding relevant papers based on the user's own reading, accessing papers from anywhere online and reading papers on the go with an iPhone app. The company was founded in November 2007 in London (CEO & co-founder: Dr Victor Henning, Jan Reichelt: president & co-founder). The team comprises researchers, graduates, and open source developers from a variety of academic institutions. Company investors include the former executive chairman of, the former founding engineers of Skype, and the former Head of Digital Strategy at Warner Music Group.
